“Some seeds need fire to germinate”

Back in May, we were in South Carolina and visited Caesars Head State Park. As we took the winding, twisting road up into the mountains, we were struck by the still very evident damage from Hurricane Helene along with the recent wildfires in the area. We took in the surrounding landscapes in awe, wonder, and shock, remarking how nature can be such a powerful, and at times, destructive force.

Amidst the destruction, it was clear nature was making a comeback and new growth was emerging among the burned tree limbs and ash. My husband, who is a Forestry major, said something that hit my spirit, and I just couldn’t shake it. He said, “Some seeds need fire to germinate.”

He went on to explain that fire clears overgrown forests and littered forest floors. This in turn makes way for new growth, including new plants / flora. I was so intrigued by this, and I knew immediately the Holy Spirit had a lesson in this. I had to investigate further!

I learned that some seeds lay dormant in soil due to lack of sunlight, water, oxygen, etc., when forests and forest floors become overgrown. Fire clears the overgrowth, and it is the heat (sometimes even just the smoke) from the fire that cracks the hard external casing / shell of the seed. That creates the opportunity for sunlight, water, and oxygen to penetrate the seed. The seed then germinates and begins its transformation from a seed into a seedling, ultimately growing over time into its mature plant state.

Did you catch that? The fire causes a chain reaction of events – clearing, cracking, germination, and growth. I couldn’t help but draw some parallels between what happens in nature and what happens in our walk with Jesus.

1. Fire as a Purifying and Preparing Agent

As mentioned, some seeds (like certain pine trees and wildflowers) have hard, protective coatings that only open after exposure to the intense heat of fire. Spiritually, this mirrors how God uses trials to break through our hardness (our pride, self-reliance, sin, or resistance) so that new life can emerge.

Scripture:

  • “He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver…” – Malachi 3:3
  • “These [trials] have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith…may result in praise, glory and honor…” – 1 Peter 1:6-7

Biblical Parallel:

The refining fire is not meant to destroy us, but to prepare us for new growth, just like fire breaks open seeds to allow life to begin.

2. Death Before Life – A Pattern in the Kingdom

Just as seeds lie dormant until fire awakens them, spiritual growth often begins after a season of “death,: such as the ending of self, pride, or past identity. Fire, in this case, represents the dying of the old so the new can emerge.

Scripture:

  • “Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.” – John 12:24

Biblical Parallel:

God may allow fiery trials to “kill off” what hinders our fruitfulness. What looks like destruction is actually the beginning of multiplication. “Kingdom math” is addition by subtraction.

3. Fire Prepares the Ground for Fruitfulness

In nature, fire clears away old, dead brush and opens space for new growth. In our lives, God often burns away distractions or idols so the soil of our heart is fertile for His Word and calling.

Scripture:

  • “Every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.” – John 15:2
  • “Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?” – Jeremiah 23:29

Biblical Parallel:

The fire prepares us to receive more from God, just as scorched soil becomes ideal for new growth.

4. Fire as the Presence and Work of God

In Scripture, fire often represents God’s presence, power, and purification. Think of the burning bush, the pillar of fire, or Pentecost. When God’s fire touches us, it ignites transformation.

Scripture:

  • “Our God is a consuming fire.” – Hebrews 12:29
  • “He makes His ministers a flame of fire.” – Hebrews 1:7
  • “They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.” – Acts 2:3

Biblical parallel:

Sometimes, God sends “fire” (spiritual challenges, deep encounters) to awaken callings and gifts lying dormant, just as fire awakens seeds to sprout.

Fire Is Not the End—It’s the Beginning

What seems like a destructive season in life may actually be God’s appointed method to unlock your destiny. Like the seed that will never grow until it meets fire, you may not fully blossom until you’ve walked through the fire of God’s refining, cleansing, and awakening love.
