An Open Letter

There’s a viral situation playing out online and all over social media right now. Exposure followed by mockery and memes of said exposure. I am human and understand mocking someone’s foolishness. Being transparent, it was my first inclination, too. Then conviction hit.

I am human, but I am a Christian first and foremost. I am called to look at this situation with the love of Jesus and with my spiritual eyes. The reality is no marriage is immune from challenges, temptations, sin, and the tactics of the enemy, whether the husband and wife are Christian or not. It started in the Garden of Eden and continues today.

The only real difference is that those challenges, temptations, and sin typically play out privately as opposed to the world stage. This particular situation happened very publicly. The same or similar happens privately every day.

As I sat with the Lord this morning to process and pray, below are some things I believe He wants to say to us, His sons and daughters. He loves us, He loves them, and He wants to help us all.

  1. Pray for everyone involved – The wife, the children, the husband, the other woman. Pray for repentance, salvation, forgiveness, healing, and anything else Holy Spirit highlights.
  2. Reflect on how we value and esteem covenant – Marriage is a covenant with God and our spouse. It is meant to be sacred. It should grieve every Christian to see the marriage covenant defiled.
  3. Show compassion and kindness – Every person involved is hurting, and that hurt is far deeper than what we see on the surface. They need help, they need love, they need support. All of them.
  4. Consider our community and unity – We undoubtedly have brothers and sisters in Christ dealing with infidelity and the effects of it themselves. This situation undoubtedly brings up “stuff” for them – both sides. We don’t want to minimize or dismiss that with mockery, even if when directed at a different situation altogether. We want to embrace them and walk with them, not cause them to fear mockery or judgment.
  5. Examine our own hearts and have empathy – We all have sin, and we all had sin that Jesus exposed to us, mostly likely in private. But imagine for a moment being in their shoes. What if our worst sins – past or even present – were projected on a jumbotron in front of the whole world and then mocked? We’d be horrified!

With all humility, grace, peace, truth, and love, because this is as much for me as anyone,

Kamy
